It’s that time of the year again. With the days fast approaching December 31, awards for the “Best XI” of 2008 are being handed left and right. The biggest one (at least as far as us Europeans are concerned) probably being UEFA’s Team of the Year (voting is still open on uefa.com here). While we wait for the UEFA popular vote (winners announced in January), let’s have a look at what the main sports newspaper in France has in store for us this year. Here’s L’Équipe’s All-Star XI Football Players for 2008. And once again, don’t be surprised if Premiership elements are leading the way and Serie A is snubbed…Firstly, a point should be made that this year there were two “Best XI” selections: the first one made by L’Équipe’s journalists, and the second one voted online by users on the paper’s official website. Differences between the two formations abound, but one striking similarity is that there’s a large majority of players from the EPL (6/4, i.e. six in the journalist vote and four in the popular vote). The Spanish Liga is right behind with 4/4, shortly followed by the Italian Serie A (2/1) and the Bundesliga (0/2).Another noteworthy point: seven of the players selected are European champions, in one form or another (four with Man Utd, three with Spain).Note that only six players were selected in both formations (Casillas, D.Alves, R.Ferdinand, Messi, Gerrard, and C-Ron), and the onl

12 Vote(s)

But that is easy-to-get news—unless you don't have a calendar at home. But the real big news is that Arsene Wenger is being touted as the favorite to resolve the drunken decision of appointing Juande Ramos at Real Madrid at the end of the season. Will Arsene Wenger quit The Gunners after 12-and-a half years of success? It remains to be seen, but with a reported offer of £25million contract, Wenger should really consider starting to love cash. If it were Wenger, R-R would move on.Jermaine Pennant is a wanted man-and not only to warm the benches at Anfield. But that's not all he caught the eye of.Europe's elite became interested in the young star, after he showed off all his talent and skill in 35 appearances for Banat, scoring two crucial goals that

12 Vote(s)

Well, well, well! When I joined Bleacher Report way back on April 28th of this year I would never have thought that seven months later I'd still be writing. If I'm honest, I only really started writing for this site to humour my friend, Sam Langley who seemed to want to take this seriously, and saw it as a chance to get working on his journalism skills.I fully expected, after writing my first article, to never come back on this site again. But, while writing that first article, I began to think about journalism as a possible career path for me. And, as I wrote more and more, I realised that I enjoyed writing about sports, and my opinions on it.Now, imagine getting paid to do that! Journalism is now what I plan to do at University.Bleacher Report has given me a chance to hone my writing skills, and I think I have come a long way since that first article.Lots of people have taught me lots of lessons that have helped me along the way, and I am grateful to all those who have done so.I first hit the 1000 reads mark with my second article, and have been lucky enough to have gone on to hit that mark a fair few times in my writing.By far my most successful article in terms of reads, however, was "The Top Five Weirdest Olympic Events", which topped 50,000 reads. In my 250 articles to date, only one has become an Article of the Day, but I am proud to have had even one!
Another day, another ABU article in the mainstream press, this one coming from The Independent. The acts of petulance continually committed by Manchester United on the football fields of this country and the Continent never cease to amaze. The fact that a team with talent and quality to animate the football Gods in their prime seats cheerfully continues to stoop to such lowly antics as diving in pursuit of cheap free kicks or penalties, undermines so much of what Sir Alex Ferguson has achieved at England’s most famous club.Of course, Manchester United are the only club who has players who dive. Didier Drogba, Joe Cole, Emanual Adebayor, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole, Fernando Torres, amongst others, have all shown themselves as divers, yet United are the ones to be singled out for criticism.Wayne Rooney went to ground too easily against Villarreal and our manager was man enough to respond. Jose Mourinho could only admit Drogba dived after he left the club, Arsene Wenger never sees it, but our manager came out and held his hands up, saying Rooney made a mistake.“If I saw a team-mate doing it, I would definitely have a word,” said Gerrard in his autobiography. “I don’t think there’s anything worse than a player diving when no one’s been anywhere near him. It does ruin the game.”Gerrard dives but pretends that he doesn’t and claims to be anti-diving, yet he faces no public criticism from the likes of Bills.
Long before Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, or Steven Gerrard were diving in the Premier League, Robert Pires was perfecting the art for Arsenal. His most famous dive arguably came towards the end of Arsenal’s unbeaten season, where the penalty he earned saved Arsenal from defeat, and kept their record in tact. The likes of Gerrard dive all over the place, but then pretend he is entirely innocent. "None of that here," he once claimed he’d tell a team mate if he saw them diving. Pires was exactly the same; diving here, there, and everywhere, and after the game, Wenger would claim he didn’t see it.Today, Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson have responded to Rooney’s dive against Villarreal last night."It is uncharacteristic of Wayne," said Ferguson. "He thought he was going to be tackled and made the most of it. But he has seen it again and apologised to me. You don’t usually see it from him. Maybe he had been watching Robert Pires too much. At least he said sorry. You would not hear Pires saying that, bloody hell!"Rooney also explained his actions, saying: "I thought I was going to get kicked and tried to ride the challenge.""Bloody Hell, You Wouldn’t Hear Pires Apologise For Diving!" was originally published at The Republik of Mancunia.

13 Vote(s)

Its Arsenal vs. Dynamo Kiev and there's little over four minutes of play left and it seems that Arsenal are going to slump to another disappointing draw but then suddenly the reliable leader Cesc Fabregas puts a comfortable pass into out-of-form striker Nicklas Bendtner who turns and smashes it in the back of the net for the winner.A huge relief for the big Dane who has seen himself in very poor form and that vital goal should boost his confidence and belief in himself and his skill.Hopefully will see him return to form. Having only managed a feeble four goals this season, Bendtner has been the poorest out of the fit strikers, Bendtner has also contributed poorly in the league only managing one goal which is disappointing as he has played the most games up front out of all the strikers.I have been harsh on Bendtner this season and some of his performances have frustrated me greatly, his first touch is often poor and he tends to be very clumsy and lazy on and off the ball.Compared to Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie Bendtner lacks a lot of skill and pace and that strikers instinct plus with Eduardo almost return to full fitness he is likely to jump Bendtner in the thirrd striker role.Carlos Vela I believe already is a much better striker than the Dane (but Wenger thinks other wise). Vela is still young but in a few years he should be well ahead of Bendtner.I also think if Bendter was sold a pretty handy fee would come from it which would gi

14 Vote(s)

With their most recent draw in the books, Chelsea manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari, stated on Wednesday evening that if his side draw to Cluj, he should return to Brazil. If this is the case, and it very likely will be if the Blues do draw, it will mean the third manager for Chelsea in under a year and a half. The question that will arise to most of Europe, if Scolari leaves, is; when will they find a manager that will stay?I think a more appropriate question is: Does the management of Chelsea really matter to the teams success?Well Does It?I think both the long and the short answers to this are no. When you see the dramatic change that has occurred at Stamford Bridge in the last eighteen months, the evidence is one change away from being rock solid.I would venture a guess that most people that support one of the big four teams in the Premier League don't consider what would happen if their teams manager were to leave in the middle of a season.I think once you hit a certain number of talented players, the coaching becomes a secondary part of the picture to a certain extent.I don't mean to say that Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, or Rafael Benitez do not have an influence on their teams. They do. However, a team of great players will still produce goals and demolish sides. If the manager were removed, a few things would likely happen. There would be turmoil among the players. If the gaffer was a liked man then the players would certainly be angry and voice an opposition. But the f

18 Vote(s)

Five-time winner Liverpool, Italian champion Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid all moved on to the knockout phase of the Champions League on Wednesday but last season’s runners-up Chelsea still has work to do in the final round of games after a 1-1 tie with Bordeaux.Steven Gerrard, coming off a groin injury, scored on a header in the 23rd minute to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory over Marseille while Atletico Madrid beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in the other Group D game to finish second in the group.Barcelona won 5-2 at Sporting in a meeting of two clubs that had already qualified. Shakhtar Donetsk routed FC Basel 5-0 behind a hat trick by Jadson in another high-scoring Group C game.Inter was beaten 1-0 at home by Panathinaikos but still qualified. Its two nearest rivals, Panathinaikos and Anorthosis Famagusta, meet Dec. 9 and only one of the teams can finish above the Serie A leader.Josu Sarriegi revived Panathinaikos’ chances with the only goal at San Siro in the 69th minute. The Cypriot team Anorthosis, one of the surprises of the competition, squandered a two-goal lead and was held to a 2-2 tie by Werder Bremen to slip from second to third.Chelsea appeared on course to join the other three qualifiers after Nicolas Anelka put the Blues ahead at Bordeaux. But Alou Diarra tied it in the 83rd and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard was sent off near the end for two yellow cards.AS Roma went top of Group A after winning 3-1 at CFR Cluj, helped by two goals by Matteo Brighi. William Gallas! He also came up against old foe Nicolas Anelka of Chelsea, Patrice Evra of Manchester United and Lionel Faure who plays rugby for Sale. The awards took place last night, November 26th, and aims to celebrate the most talented members of London's 300,000 strong French community.I'm sure the award is currently pride of place on the mantel place in his home—something else for the missus to clean at least. After beating such stiff competition, Arsene should be a very proud Francais at the minute.

13 Vote(s)

Perhaps the greatest Swede to ever step onto the pitch, Henrik Larsson began his professional career in Högaborg at just 17 years-of-age. Eventually, he moved to Helsingborgs IF and scored 50 goals in just 56 appearances. These performances drew the attention of Dutch club Feyenoord. Problems arised during a contract dispute and Larsson was signed by Celtic in July 1997 for £650,000. His first league match and European match with the club weren't the greatest of performances.A giveway resulted in a goal for Hibernian, and an own-goal was scored by the Swede in his European debut. Little did everyone realize, that Larsson would go on to become one of the club's greatest players of all time.Ultimately, he was donned the 'King of Kings'. With dreadlocks resembling Bob Marley's, Larsson led Celtic to a Scottish Premier League title and a League Cup in his first season. This ended the Rangers' run of nine consecutive titles. The horrific leg injury he suffered in a UEFA Cup match against Lyon in 1999 could have ended his career. Those of you that saw that bottom half of his broken left leg hanging in his sock should realize how amazing it was that he managed to return to action.More incredible was the fact that he went on to win Europe's Golden Boot in 2001, ahead of £60 million worth of Serie A talent in the form of Hernan Crespo and Andrei Shevchenko. He totalled 53 goals in all competitions that year.In his book, Henrik Larsson: A Season In Paradise, he re-visit

7 Vote(s)
